4 domande a... ARCAD Software

In vista del prossimo evento di Faq400 dal titolo: "ONL-i DAYS" del 10 e 11 giugno presso il Milano Luiss Hub di Porta Garibaldi, abbiamo rivolto alcune domande a ARCAD Software, sponsor ed espositore all'evento. Grazie a Philippe Magne (CEO di Arcad), che ha risposto volentieri alla nostra intervista.

1. Perché per Voi è importante esserci agli ONL-i DAYS? Quali suggerimenti dareste perché la Community cresca in sintonia con tutto l'Ecosistema IBM i?

Per noi è davvero importante essere presenti all'evento ONL-i DAYS, dal momento che è fondamentale passare il giusto messaggio al maggior numero di utenti IBM i possibile e dimostrare che l'ecosistema è vivo, ma soprattutto attivo!

Le Aziende che inizieranno in ritardo il percorso di digital transformation si troveranno a fronteggiare gravi problemi nel prossimo futuro. È fondamentale approcciare questo percorso passo dopo passo, con il business che svolge il ruolo di principale driver. La piattaforma IBM i è pronta per la trasformazione digitale già da molto tempo: l'ostacolo maggiore è che pochi ne sono realmente consapevoli. Questo è il motivo per cui la prima reazione è "sostituiamo la piattaforma", mentre, probabilmente è proprio il sistema ideale per il mondo digitale di oggi. Pensate ad esempio alla sua affidabilità, la sua sicurezza (non sono stati rilevati virus per decadi) e scalabilità, estremamente importanti data la crescita esponenziale del volume dei dati nel mondo.

2. Come la piattaforma IBM i può avere ancora un ruolo centrale per le PMI italiane?

È risaputo che la piattaforma IBM i ha il TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) più basso sul mercato. È la stretta integrazione tra il sistema operativo e il gestore del database che lo rende così unico, a garanzia dei bassi costi operativi della piattaforma. Questo livello di automazione significa che non c'è bisogno di una funzione di amministratore del database nel mondo IBM i.

La roadmap dei prodotti IBM per i sistemi IBM i arriva fino al 2029. E non c'è bisogno di preoccuparsi che IBM finisca per abbandonare questo sistema. L'hardware è rigorosamente identico alle piattaforme Unix e Linux, senza costi aggiuntivi per IBM. Il funzionamento è molto stabile e intuitivo. È il database che ha concentrato tutti gli sforzi di IBM - e ora il DB2 for i è diventato un vero database relazionale. Tutti i database di ricerca e sviluppo di IBM beneficiano della piattaforma.

Ma per sfruttare questo vantaggio competitivo, gli utilizzatori di IBM i devono affrontare con urgenza la modernizzazione delle proprie applicazioni e la loro "trasformazione DevOps". Queste iniziative serviranno per aprire il sistema IBM i ad una nuova generazione di sviluppatori e migliorare l'accessibilità delle funzionalità IBM i di base a sistemi esterni tramite Webservices / microservices. La chiave è abbattere i "silos" tra le diverse culture di sviluppo del software, "standardizzando" il codice sorgente in un repository comune (come Git) e condividendo una pipeline CI / CD aziendale (tipicamente Jenkins e Jira) su IBM i e altre piattaforme come Linux e Windows.

3. Cosa presenterete, in particolare, durante le giornate del 10 e 11 giugno, dedicate alla formazione della Community IBM i?

Annunceremo la nostra nuova importante release ARCAD, la V11. Questa release sposa lo sviluppo tradizionale di IBM i con il mondo di sistemi aperti di Git - rendendo possibile lo sviluppo in stile RDi e 5250 in parallelo, tutti sincronizzati su Git come unico repository del codice sorgente. Questa integrazione senza problemi di Git / Jenkins riduce i costi di sviluppo su IBM i e riduce drasticamente i tempi di consegna del software.

Inoltre, con la V11, stiamo rilasciando nuove release di alcuni tool che presenteremo durante l'evento:

• ARCAD-Codechecker: strumento per automatizzare le revisioni del codice
• ARCAD-Verifier: strumento di test di regressione
• ARCAD-iUnit, il nostro strumento di unit test
• ARCAD-iNow: il nostro nuovo strumento di modernizzazione dell'interfaccia utente
• ARCAD Macro Maker: automazione dei processi grafica per IBM i.

1. Why is it important for you to be at the ONL-i DAYS? What suggestions would you give for the Community to grow in harmony with the entire IBM i Ecosystem?

It is very important for us to be present on the ONL-I Days event, as it is critical to pass the right message to a maximum of IBM i customers and to demonstrate that the ecosystem is well and truly alive.

Companies that start late on the digital transformation path risk serious troubles in the near future. It is vital to take a step-by step approach, with the business as the main driver. The IBM i platform has been ready for this transformation since quite a long time now. The challenge is that very few executives are aware of that. That's the reason why the first reaction is "let's replace the platform", while, in reality, IBM i is probably the ideal platform for the digital world - take for example its exemplary reliability, its security (no virus detected for decades), and scalability - increasingly important given the exponential growth of data volume worldwide.

2. How can the IBM i platform still have a central role for Italian SMEs?

It's common knowledge that the IBM i platform has the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) on the market. It is the tight integration between the O/S and the database manager that is so unique, guaranteeing the platform's low operating costs. This level of automation means that there is no need for a database administrator function in the IBM i world.

IBM's product roadmap for IBM i goes as far as 2029. And no need to worry that IBM will eventually abandon this system - no company will kill a cash cow! The hardware is strictly identical to the Unix and Linux platforms, at no additional cost for IBM. The operating is very stable and intuitive. It is the database that has focused all of IBM's efforts - and now DB2 for i has become a true relational database. All R & D database work at IBM benefits the platform.

But to leverage this competitive advantage, IBM i shops need to urgently address the modernization of their custom applications and also their "DevOps transformation". These initiatives will serve to open the IBM i system to a new generation of developers and enhance the accessibility of core IBM i functionality from external systems via Webservices/microservices. The key is to break down "silos" between development cultures - by standardizing on a common source code repository (such as Git) and sharing an enterprise CI/CD pipeline (typically Jenkins and Jira) across IBM i and other platforms such as Linux and Windows.

3. What will you present, in particular, during the days of 10th and 11th June, dedicated to the formation of the IBM i Community?

We will be announcing our new major ARCAD release, the V11. This release marries traditional IBM i development with open systems world of Git - making it possible for RDi and 5250 style development in parallel, all synchronized over Git as common source code repository. This seamless Git/Jenkins integration drives down development costs on IBM i and radically shortens software delivery timescales.

In addition, with the V11 we are releasing several new tools for IBM i:

-ARCAD-Codechecker: tool for automating IBM i code reviews, to guarantee code quality and compliance,
